Matt Cardona: I Accepted a Pay Cut to Return to WWE

October 5, 2026

Since his official return at the start of January, Matt Cardona has been living a waking dream.

After making his mark on the independent circuit for more than five years, the former Intercontinental Champion chose to return to WWE not only to work alongside his partner Chelsea Green, but also to become the world champion. And financially, the man who used to be known as Zack Ryder isn’t exactly raking it in.

In an interview on the BrunchBoys YouTube channel, Matt admitted that he earned more money on the independent scene than he currently does in WWE.

He states :

“I’ve earned more money outside WWE than I ever did inside WWE. I technically took a pay cut to return to WWE. That shows how much money I was making on the indie circuit. But coming back to WWE is the ultimate opportunity, because if this works, it will be the ultimate raise.”

Unfortunately, the Indy God has been suffering a string of defeats on SmackDown for several months, and he sustained a triceps injury at the end of August. We hope that upon his return, he will be able to climb the ranks and reach his objective.
