Remember, more than three and a half years ago, Sami Zayn was tantalizingly close to ending Roman Reigns’ legendary run in Montreal.
After leaving The Bloodline at the Royal Rumble with that legendary chair shot, the Canadian challenged the Tribal Chief at Elimination Chamber 2023. Supported by the Montreal crowd that night, Sami gave it his all to topple Roman, even though his chances were slim. After about thirty minutes of an outstanding match amplified by the roar of the crowd, Sami Zayn collapsed to Roman Reigns.
Should he have defeated Roman Reigns that day? In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, the current undisputed champion looked back on one of the most significant matches of his career.
He states:
“At the time, I believed there were arguments in favor of that victory. But when you bring up this domino effect, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that I should have won.”
“If you look at my run at that moment, I think anyone could have made that argument. But again, it was a matter of timing, and Cody was also at the peak of his form then, and they were building something. Then that led to Cody’s victory the following year, and it’s even more rewarding. Anyway, I don’t know.”
“Could it have or should it have worked? I think so.”
Today, in 2026, Sami Zayn will have a chance at revenge if he can pin Roman Reigns on Crown Jewel in five short days.
