Matt Cardona Undergoes Triceps Surgery

August 29, 2026

Let’s go back two weeks. On SmackDown, against Gunther. We fought hard. I was wiped out. We had an unscheduled match; I was in my gear, unprotected, and especially without elbow pads. I endured a powerbomb onto the commentators’ table, followed by two powerbombs onto the ring apron.

My elbow hurt. I didn’t pay it much mind. Then, the following week at the gym, it still ached a bit, but I told myself: “Okay, I’m just banged up. Nothing serious.” And then, last Friday, I faced Kit Wilson. In roughly the first minute, I hit a drop kick from the second rope. I landed on the front of my body, directly on my elbow as I do in almost every match, or nearly, and I heard a crack. I thought: “There’s no way I injured my elbow by doing a drop kick, right?”

[…] Grabbing the ropes, I had absolutely no strength in my right arm. I told myself: “Okay, this triceps is torn. I can feel it.” So I dragged it back into the ring, finished the match and beat him. The next day, I had an MRI and, indeed, the triceps was completely ripped off the bone, right at the elbow.

Matt Cardona expresses disappointment with the timing of the injury, feeling that something would change in his booking, which has been somewhat underwhelming since his return to WWE:

“And now, I think it’s even worse because, let’s be honest, these past seven months I haven’t done much, have I? I was optimistic that something would change, and it did happen a few weeks ago with the opportunity to face Gunther.”

He states he will be out for about five to six months for rehab and to be able to step back into WWE’s ring. Despite the frustrating news, Cardona isn’t ready to give up and he vows to defy the odds to return as soon as possible with the same objective:

The next updates will be something to watch. In the meantime, Matt Cardona will be absent from WWE shows for the coming months.
