More than two years after its inauguration, the Speed title has been officially retired.
With the unification of the North American and Speed titles this Sunday at NXT Heatwave, fans had already guessed the belt’s fate. On Tuesday night during the NXT episode of September 1, Robert Stone asked Zaria to choose between her two titles, and the Australian handed the Speed title to her general manager. Stone then decided that the men’s title held by Lexis King would also disappear. The BirthRight leader challenged the decision but did not give up.
The first WWE Speed champion in history was Ricochet, who won it on April 26, 2024. Then, the belt was allocated to the NXT roster starting from November 2025. The Speed title was far from convincing WWE fans. Some online users blamed the belt, because matches (only 3 to 5 minutes) were far too short and weakened the wrestlers. On CageMatch in particular, the Speed title holds a rating of 1.73/10: this controversial trophy thus disappears for the greatest pleasure of purists.
